In a bold initiative to revolutionize mental health care, Peer Support Space, a nonprofit organization based in Orlando, is leading the way in launching the first Peer Respite Home in Central Florida. This innovative approach offers a refuge for individuals aged 18 and above who are dealing with mental health issues, providing peer-centered support in a non-clinical setting for a duration of up to one week.

Redefining Mental Health Care

Differing from traditional mental health care facilities, the Peer Respite Home will be manned by peer specialists exclusively. These specialists, who have personal experiences with mental health challenges, undergo training to offer empathetic and non-judgmental support. Their role is not to diagnose or resolve issues, but to provide understanding, comfort, and companionship.

A Haven for Healing

The Peer Respite Home is currently undergoing renovation to transform into a sanctuary designed to promote healing and connection. It will feature 3.5 bedrooms, a kitchen, a game room, a living room, and an outdoor area. In addition to the physical amenities, the home will offer various workshops focused on cooking, gardening, and expressive arts, fostering a sense of community and personal growth among its guests.

A Community Endeavor

This groundbreaking project is the culmination of a dedicated community effort spanning nearly five years. More than 200 individuals have contributed their insights and resources to bring this vision to fruition. Among them, Mariette Tomlinson, a group facilitator, has expressed her enthusiasm for this unconventional model of care. She firmly believes in the power of personalized mental health support that prioritizes individual needs over standardized solutions.

After years of planning, development, and unwavering commitment, the Peer Respite Home is scheduled to open its doors to the public in April, ushering in a new era of mental health care in Central Florida.
