CARICOM and USAID Initiate Cyber Resilience Project to Strengthen Security Amidst Rising Cyber Threats

Ambitious Cybersecurity Effort

Our sources tell us that on March 5, 2024, a start of a monumental initiative was officially marked. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat together with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) publicized the commencement of the Cyber Resilience Strategy 2030 Project. A unique project, it has been fashioned to augment cybersecurity capabilities across the CARICOM states in light of escalating global cyber threats.

CARICOM Council’s Approval

This ambitious plan gained the full endorsement from the CARICOM’s Council for Trade and Economic Development back in 2019. The whole purpose of the project is to boost collaboration among Caribbean nations against cybersecurity threats, which, in turn, bolsters their resilience, both as individual and collective entities.

Dual Approach for Cyber Protection

The strategy of this project incorporates a two-pronged approach. It gears at augmenting each state’s cyber defenses, fitting to their distinct landscape, while capitalizing on regional proficiency and resources for a sweeping protection.

CGA’s Participation and Role

In this groundbreaking task, Cambridge Global Advisors (CGA) played a significant role under USAID’s ProICT activity. The financial requirements were met through the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP). Thereby, it is indeed a significant stride towards incorporation of cybersecurity measures as an integral part of the CARICOM Single ICT Space.

Steering Committee Composition

Our sources inform that the steering committee helming this project includes an eclectic mix of technical, governmental, and independent experts under the guidance of CARICOM Secretariat. Their shared mission? Enhance the sharing of important information, establish strategic associations, and boost flexibility in dealing with digital threats.

Upcoming Tasks

In the forthcoming months, the CGA team will undertake interviews and research to identify potential cyber vulnerabilities within the region. The highest goal? To establish an all-embracing cyber resilience framework for the CARICOM.

Ultimate Strategy

On finalisation, this revolutionary strategy will address any possible legislative loopholes, evaluate the infrastructure and foster development of a robust cyber workforce. In essence, this raises the security and stability of the CARICOM Small Island Developing States (SIDS), essentially those at risk to cyber threats and natural disasters.
