Supreme Court Urged To Reevaluate Handling of Sandeshkhali Investigation

Our Reader Wall source has reported that the West Bengal government is attempting to challenge a ruling by the Calcutta High Court regarding an incident involving the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The state government has addressed the Supreme Court, pushing for an immediate review of its petition against the High Court’s decision.

Investigation Transferred to Central Bureau of Investigation

The dispute originates from a directive stipulated by the High Court in Calcutta, which commanded the transfer of an investigation surrounding an occurrence in Sandeshkhali on January 5, involving the attack on ED officials. The High Court ordered that the responsibility for the examination be passed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

This move was met with resistance from the West Bengal government, leading them to address the Supreme Court for an urgent reconsideration of their plea. Justice Sanjiv Khanna was the official who counseled the legal representation of the state to submit their application during the Chief Justice of India’s lunchtime.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi Leading the Plea

Abhishek Singhvi, a senior advocate, led the plea to the Supreme Court on the state government’s behalf, mentioning it before a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta.

The Core Issue

The main issue stems from opposing perspectives on the appropriate handling of the investigation. ED is advocating for the probe to be handled by the CBI while the West Bengal government promotes the idea of a local police-led inquiry into the matter.

This request follows a ruling by the High Court, which validated the ED’s push for the probe to be transferred to the CBI. The Court also ordered a shift in the custody of the TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh from the state police to the CBI. Sheikh was arrested on February 29.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Activities Amidst The Legal Dispute

The plea for urgency comes amidst various noteworthy actions taken by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. These include the initiation of various metro projects and his journey to Bihar to introduce initiatives collectively valued at Rs 12,800 crore.
