Ubuntu 20.04: Enhancing User Experience with New Features and Enhancements
Ubuntu 20.04, nicknamed Focal Fossa, is a significant milestone in the evolution of one of the most popular open-source operating systems in the world. This long-term support (LTS) release brings a range of enhancements and new features, all aimed at elevating the user experience to new heights.
Revamped Appearance Menu and GNOME Desktop
The first notable change in Ubuntu 20.04 is the revamped appearance menu. Users now have three theme options to choose from – Light, Standard, and Dark. In addition, users can easily adjust icon scales and dock positions without requiring external tools. However, enabling the full Dark mode may still necessitate the use of GNOME Tweaks. The updated GNOME Desktop 3.36 also comes with a built-in GNOME extensions manager, eliminating the need for additional installations for extension management.
Improved Usability and Reduced Distractions
Another significant update is the cosmetic overhaul of the application launcher. It now provides smoother scrolling and categorizes search results, contributing to improved usability. Additionally, the introduction of a ‘Do Not Disturb’ (DND) toggle empowers users to minimize distractions by muting notifications.
Enhanced Performance and Security
Ubuntu 20.04 also brings improvements in performance and security. The native integration of ExFAT file system support simplifies handling files from cameras and SD cards. Gamers will appreciate the inclusion of Feral’s GameMode, which optimizes system performance during gameplay. However, it is worth noting that GameMode lacks a graphical user interface (GUI). Ubuntu has also embedded WireGuard VPN technology into the Kernel, offering enhanced performance and security benefits, particularly for enterprise cloud users.
Additional Updates and Enhancements
The release introduces fractional scaling for displays, which can be adjusted through a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI). This is a boon for users with HiDPI laptops and monitors. Other updates include aesthetic changes to the lock screen, more power menu options, improved fingerprint support, and the switch to Python 3 as the default, marking the end of Python 2 support. Notably, the Amazon app has been removed from the system. Ubuntu 20.04 demonstrates its commitment to improving user experience across various aspects, catering to both casual and power users.
