Vyjayanthimala Bali Recognised for her Artistic Contributions
A revered actor, musician, and Bharathanatyam dancer, Vyjayanthimala Bali, who commenced her dance journey at eight and recently exhibited Sri Andal’s Sanga Tamizh Malai’ of 30 pasurams at the age of 90. Bali acknowledged this honor with humility and gratitude towards the Government of India. Her musical and dance prowess were groomed by renowned figures K.P. Kittappa Pillai and musician D.K. Pattammal.
Padma Subrahmanyam’s Charming Career in Dance Acknowledged
Another exceptional Bharathanatyam dancer, guru, and choreographer, Padma Subrahmanyam, was also bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan this year. The news brought her immense joy and humility. With a respected lineage, being the daughter of Director K. Subrahmanyam, she’s an internationally recognized film pioneer and freedom fighter, who has received over 135 awards. Her pioneering research on the Karanas in Indian dance and sculpture is renowned worldwide.
Award for Nagaswaram Artist Seshampatti T. Sivalingam
Emerging Nagaswaram artist, Seshampatti T. Sivalingam was chosen for Padma Shri in arts. Sivalingamos, who began his professional career at 10, attributes this recognition to the blessings of his gurus and parents. He moved to Chennai when he was just 20, where he studied at the Government Music College and performed concerts.
Badrappan M. Lauded for Preserving Valli Oyil Kummi Folklore
Badrappan M., another Padma Shri honoree, is known for executing Valli Oyil Kummi, a folk dance. As a farmer by profession, he emphatically expresses his passion for the folk arts and the importance of maintaining integrity through stories.
Writer Joe D’Cruz Receives Recognition
Selected for the Padma Shri in literature and education is writer Joe D’Cruz. D’Cruz originally started a PhD in economics that transformed his perspective of society and introduced him to the fishing communities whose voices he has been representing through his work.
Award for G. Natchiar’s Significant Contributions to Healthcare
G. Natchiar, an integral founding-member, and Director-Emeritus of Aravind Eye Care System, has been awarded the Padma Shri. Her work involved providing training to doctors from under-developed countries and serving the disadvantaged through her healthcare institution.
Posthumous Award and Accolade in Sports
Posthumously, actor-turned-politician Vijayakant will be honored with the Padma Bhushan, and squash player Joshna Chinnappa will receive the Padma Shri in the sports category. Both honors further highlight the diversity and abundance of talent in Tamil Nadu.
