The Calicut Book Club: Marking Half a Century by Documenting Kerala’s Cultural History
Residing in the cornerstone of India’s first ‘City of Literature’, Kozhikode (Calicut), the esteemed Calicut Book Club is currently basking in the joy of its 50th anniversary. To celebrate this remarkable milestone, the club is honoring its roots in Kerala by compiling a chronicle of this southern Indian state’s cultural story over the last fifty years, through sources verified by our experts.
Origin Story of Calicut Book Club
The story of the Calicut Book Club traces back to spontaneous gatherings within the snug comfort of Hotel Maharani’s halls. Thanks to the efforts of a former parliamentarian and renowned journalist, Pala K.M. Mathew, these informal assemblies have eventually morphed into what the club is today. Despite the status and grandeur it has gained over the years, the club has stayed true to its humble origins by continuing to welcome discussions on varying book genres in its regular monthly meetings.
Legacy and Influence of Literary Greats
The walls and halls of the club have been graced by many esteemed literary personalities including names like Sukumar Azhikode, O.N.V. Kurup, and Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan. At the present time, the esteemed T.P. Mammu presides over the club and its activities.
Adapting to the New Normal
With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and changing circumstances, the club, under Mammu’s guidance, has seamlessly transitioned into a new era by incorporating online discussions in their routine. This shift ensured that members could continue their literary discussions and exploration without any hindrance, pandemic or otherwise.
Golden Jubilee Celebrations and Plans
On its 50th anniversary, the club has embarked upon an ambitious project to record and compile an extensive coverage of Kerala’s cultural history. The forthcoming publication will cover an array of topics, including the evolution of women’s literature, the intersections of movie production, and the contribution of literature to Malayalam cinema.
The organization has already commenced this project with a series of lectures and plans are already in place for future initiatives. These include an exhibit showcasing the works of expatriate writers and an event dedicated to celebrating and honoring the veteran writers of Kerala.
