In the early hours of Sunday, an unknown man carried out a bold burglary at American Police Equipment on Airline Highway, New Orleans, prompting law enforcement to issue an urgent warning to the public. The incident took place at around 12:40 a.m., with the perpetrator gaining entry to the store via the roof. Inside, he managed to disable the store’s video surveillance system by cutting the wires, leaving very little evidence of his daring act.

Stolen Possessions

The thief escaped with several items, including a blue jacket, sweaters, boots, gloves, and flashlights. However, the seriousness of the situation increases when considering the possible theft of a bulletproof vest and some collectible badges. The potential for these items to be used in deceitful and illegal activities has raised concerns within the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and the wider community.

Preventive Measures

In response to this incident, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has temporarily suspended traffic stops conducted by undercover detectives. The department is also urging the public to be extremely cautious. If signaled to stop by an unmarked vehicle that does not clearly belong to the police or sheriff’s office, citizens are advised not to comply. Instead, they should turn on their hazard lights and make their way to the nearest police station while calling 911 to verify the legitimacy of the law enforcement officer.

Public Cooperation in Investigation

The NOPD is seeking public assistance in identifying and locating the suspect. Despite the disconnection of the surveillance system, the suspect was captured on video. The department has raised the reward to $4,000 for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect. In the effort to maintain public safety, every piece of information could be vital in apprehending the audacious thief and preventing potential misuse of the stolen police equipment.
