Supreme Court Halts Proceedings Over CBI Investigation Into Alleged Fake Cast Certificate Scam
Court Proceedings Temporarily Suspended Following High Court Conflict
This news comes directly from the newsroom of Reader Wall. The Supreme Court has put on hold any proceedings in the Calcutta high court stemming from a dispute between a single judge and a division bench. This discord is centred around the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) inquiry into an alleged fraudulent caste certificate scheme. This unusual scenario saw both benches criticize each other in successive orders on the 24th and 25th of January. A five-judge constitutional bench included Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant and Aniruddha Bose. This bench attended a special hearing to discuss the matter, with further hearings scheduled for the 29th of January.
Supreme Court Intervenes in Calcutta High Court Verdict
In another development, last Friday, the Supreme Court took notice of a ruling by a single bench of the Calcutta high court that described an order from the division bench as “unlawful and disregarded”. This order was in relation to a case alleging inconsistencies in the admission process for MBBS students at state-managed medical colleges and hospitals in West Bengal.
Division Bench Reverses Single Bench Decision
In response to the single bench’s request for a CBI probe into the allegations, the division bench of the high court decided to stay the order. Further information on this matter will be reported as it becomes available. For the time being, all proceedings have been halted under the direction of the Supreme Court.
