Assam Government to Introduce Anti-Polygamy Draft Bill

As per our source, the Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is set to propose a law that prohibits polygamy. This bill is currently being scrutinized by the Law Department. The government intends to put forth the draft during the forthcoming budget session of the Assam assembly scheduled for February 5- February 28.

Moving Towards a Uniform Civil Code

The Assam Chief Minister hasn’t just limited himself to local laws. He also has shown a keen interest in the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a national-level legislation. Sarma has assured that his government will follow the proceedings of the four-day special session of the Uttarakhand assembly, starting February 5, where the UCC will be considered. This suggests that Assam might wholly adopt the UCC once it’s finalized.

Taking Input From the Public on the Polygamy Ban

Before formulating the bill against polygamy, the government has taken into account the public’s feedback and suggestions. The expert committee that had been set up for the task previously received around 150 suggestions from the public. Now, the government is weighing the possibility of introducing the entire UCC Bill rather than simply banning polygamy.

Upcoming Budget Session and Fiscal Strategies

The forthcoming budget session at the Assam assembly also holds relevance in terms of the financial blueprint for the upcoming fiscal year. The presentation of the budget is slated for February 12. Sarma has given his nod of approval to the Union Budget, describing it as beneficial for state governments, the economically disadvantaged, and the middle class. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam to initiate and lay the foundation for various developmental projects totaling over Rs 11,599 crore in Guwahati.
