World Health Organization Calls for Urgent Cancer Control Measures
In line with World Cancer Day, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has released eye-opening data on the current state of global cancer occurrences and fatalities, according to our sources. The pressing issue of escalating global cancer rates has been underscored, urging swift international intervention.
Skyrocketing Cancer Incidence and Differences
Approximately 20 million new cases and nearly 10 million incidental deaths due to cancer were documented internationally in 2022 based on the information provided by the WHO. Lung cancer holds the title for being the most prevalent and life-threatening type of cancer. Predictions made by the organization suggest a drastic 77% rise in cancer occurrences by 2050 due to factors including ageing and increasing population, lifestyle choices like alcohol and tobacco use, obesity, and environmental hazards such as pollution.
In India, various types of cancer such as breast, cervical, ovarian, mouth, and colorectal cancers were frequently diagnosed in women, whereas males predominantly exhibited cancers of the oral cavity, lung, esophagus, colorectum, and stomach. Over 1.4 million fresh cancer diagnoses and more than 900,000 resultant fatalities were reported in India in 2022 alone, with breast cancer proving to be the most fatal.
Unprecedented Inequities in Global Cancer Burdens
Nations’ human development index (HDI) greatly influenced the unequally distributed cancer burden across the globe. Despite fewer diagnostic instances, breast cancer mortality rates were noted to be significantly greater in females residing in countries with a lower HDI. International Cancer Foundation president, Professor Solange Peters, highlighted the growing disparities in cancer treatment with poorer countries, that bear 80% of the global cancer burden, receiving a meager 5% of the world’s cancer spendings.
A Plea for Global Cooperative Action
The alarming cancer prognosis demands immediate and effective international action. Additional, focused investments are advocated by the WHO to address the glaring discrepancies in cancer care and maintain human life. Attention must pivot towards precautionary measures, early detection, and regular screening exams. Prompt action is imperative. The global community cannot afford to lose more lives to this relentless disease. A consolidated global effort is required for an effective fight against cancer.
