Owens-Brockway Plant Slated for Reopening Under New Ownership
After a prolonged dormant period of nearly fifteen years following its shutdown, the Owens-Brockway plant in Charlotte is set for a resurgence. Our sources confirmed that the plant, which previously contributed to a considerable unemployment spike with the loss of between 250 and 300 jobs, is now set to reopen under the banner of a new company, Michigan Can Lines LLC.
Major Investment and Job Creation
Showing a strong commitment to the revival of the facility, Michigan Can Lines plans to infuse a whooping sum of $100 million into the 650,000-square-foot property. The decision sets the stage for a positive transformation, as it is targeted at kick-starting the production of aluminum drink cans. Importantly, this initiative announces the creation of employment opportunities, with expectations ranging between 125 to 150 jobs.
Interestingly, despite acquiring the property for over $3.1 million in 2019, the new owners have not availed any tax breaks for this project. Although there are no exact details about the salary packages for the upcoming jobs, the community resonates with an air of optimism for the potential economic revitalization this initiative aims to bring about.
The Owens-Brockway Legacy
Historical records from our sources show that for a span of 40 years, the Owens-Brockway plant served as a thriving production hub for glass containers. However, it assumed a desolate appearance since its shut-down in 2010, marking a long-term period of neglect.
