Federal Funding Injects $442,800 into Solar Panel Project at Iowa City Municipal Airport

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, put into effect by Congress in November 2021, has facilitated this smart energy initiative. Following its successful bid, the Iowa City Municipal Airport will embark on an eco-conscious journey, commencing with the installation of 300 solar panels.
Expectations from The Solar Panel Project
This much-anticipated renewables project is predicted to make significant cuts in the airport’s electric utility costs by approximately 50%. Following a bidding process in March, the contract is scheduled to be signed in April, paving the way for construction progress. The solar panels, once installed and activated, will take over powering the airport’s runway, terminal, and building lighting.
Enthusiastically endorsing the innovation, Airport Manager Michael Tharp expressed the airport’s sustained fascination with exploring this energy alternative. “Our long-held dream of actualizing a solar power project is finally coming true, thanks to this federal funding,” said Tharp.
Prior Benefactions and Anticipated Additional Funds
This isn’t the first time the airport benefits from federal allocation brokered under the same law. A previous grant facilitated the execution of a terminal space needs study. Looking ahead, the airport plans to apply for more funding to support the grand solar project following the completion of the bidding process in April.
Pilot Phase of A Larger Solar Initiative
According to the airport’s design consultant, Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, the current funding has been calculated based on the preliminary study’s energy production requirements. Brightening the larger ecological picture, this solar panel installation marks the genesis of an extensive plan to switch the entire airport’s operations to solar power, inclusive of maintaining the airport’s maintenance shop which is in the pipeline for the second installation phase.
