Rahul Gandhi’s Visit to Nagaland: Highlights

North East India, well-known for its cultural diversity and unique adversities, has always been an important part of Indian politics. This was recently acknowledged by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Mokokchung, Nagaland on January 17. During his visit, Gandhi interacted with local bikers, sharing stories from his adventures on two wheels. This interaction displayed a side of him largely unknown to the public.

Gandh’s Bond With Bikers

Rahul Gandhi’s love for motorcycles was evident during his interaction with local bikers. He discussed his motorbiking extravaganza and preferences with the group. Shahwar Hussain, one of the bikers from Assam, disclosed the details of their conversation, which included Gandhi’s favourite two-wheelers. He also revealed that Gandhi avoided biking to Nagaland due to dusty conditions and pre-planned rallies. Gandhi’s biking interest aligns back to his past when he rode to Pangong Lake in Ladakh to celebrate the birthday of his father, the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Pointing Out Failed Promises

In addition to his amiable encounters, Gandhi used his visit to call out the political failures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He criticized the government for not fulfilling the promises made to the people of Nagaland, including the implementation of the Naga Accord. He voiced his disapproval of the state’s poor road conditions, blaming it on the current government’s negligence.

Respect for India’s Diverse Culture

Gandhi also accused the BJP and RSS of undermining India’s cultural diversity and traditions. He communicated this point when he visited the Indira Gandhi Sports Stadium in Kohima. He articulated the commencement of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from the North-East to honour its rich heritage and highlighted the commitment of the Congress towards equality among all states, regardless of their geographical dimensions.

Gandhi’s tour to Nagaland was not limited to political engagements; it also aimed to shed light on issues unique to the region. With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, such intimate interactions could influence the political landscape.
