A Tribute to Karpoori Thakur’s Work

“It gives me great joy that India’s government has decided to recognize the invaluable contributions of the late Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur Ji, social justice’s guiding light, on the occasion of his birth centenary, by awarding him the Bharat Ratna. As a tireless advocate for the underprivileged and a fierce champion of empowerment and equality, his legacy is truly deserving of this prestigious honor,” stated Prime Minister Modi in a post on a well-known social media platform.

The prime minister added, “Thakur’s unmatched dedication to elevating the status of the underprivileged, coupled with his visionary leadership, have left a lasting imprint on our socio-political landscape. This award not only solidifies his extraordinary contributions, but also provides us with the inspiration to carry on his mission to foster a more equitable and fair society.”

Legacy of an Inspiring Leader

Known for his groundbreaking initiatives on behalf of the backward castes, Karpoori Thakur will receive the Bharat Ratna 35 years after his death. Thakur was born into the Nai community of Bihar and served as chief minister twice, first from December 1970 to June 1971 and again from December 1977 to April 1979. During his second term in office, Thakur pioneered the reservation of backward castes in Bihar’s government services.

Bihar’s current chief minister, Nitish Kumar, praised the decision to award the Bharat Ratna to Thakur.

Thakur’s Impact Still Felt Today

“Thakur’s honor will generate an uplifting atmosphere among the Dalit and neglected sectors of society. His recognition is long overdue,” Kumar remarked.

Union minister Nityanand Rai also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, highlighting Thakur’s lifelong commitment to serving the underprivileged and deprived.

BJP president JP Nadda also thanked the government, crediting Thakur’s lifelong commitment to the welfare of the deprived communities, as a freedom fighter, teacher, and chief minister, and finally being acknowledged by the Bharat Ratna honor.
