Bharat Rang Mahotsav Marks its 25th Anniversary in 2024

2024 will witness a significant milestone in the Indian theatre scene as Bharat Rang Mahotsav, the largest theatre festival in the country, will be celebrating its 25th year. The springboard for numerous talented actors across India, the festival, scheduled for its silver jubilee year, will be brimming over with an eclectic array of performances and programmes. Distinguished figures from the world of Indian entertainment are expected to be part of this grand occasion, such as Pankaj Tripathi, Paresh Rawal, Raghubir Yadav, and Swanand Kirkire, among others. Esteemed figures like Chittaranjan Tripathi, Mishikka Chaurasia, Om Prakash Bajaj, and Shazahn Padamsee have also lent their support. To underline the festival’s importance in the cultural landscape, Shri Ramesh Bais, the state governor, is also expected to attend.

Quarter of a Century of Theatre Excellence

The National School of Drama has always held the reins of the stately Bharat Rang Mahotsav. The festival, bound to open in Pune, is geared up to display a sundry range of theatre performances in up to 15 different cities in India. From featuring plays staged in Maharashtra to featuring international scenes from countries like Italy, Nepal, Russia, and Bangladesh, the festival nurtures a flourish of cultural exchange. Celebrating its 25th run as the world’s largest theatre festival, the theme is ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Vande Bharangam’, underscoring themes of global unity and social harmony.

Exploring Theatre Globally

Bharat Rang Mahotsav unveils a cornucopia of plays in various dialects and genres. ‘Rang Haat’, which marks Asia’s first global theatre market, has been introduced to propel international collaborations. Parallel events in ten other cities flow in harmony with the main event, ensuring a widespread celebration of theatre’s power across the nation. The festival has secured a special spot on the Bollywood calendar, with updates on fresh Bollywood releases, box office collections, and the upcoming films of 2024.

The Inclusion of Bangladesh

The 25th chapter of Bharat Rang Mahotsav brings with it an exciting development: the inclusion of five popular Bangladeshi theatre troupes, who have been invited to perform. Elevating the country’s theatre panorama, these troupes will also organise a five-day festival named ‘Bhashar Sanga, Natya Ranga, Bangladesh Utsab’ at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy before heading over to India. Not only is this initiative a first for Bangladesh, it also brings an added layer of rich cultural diversity to the festival’s line-up.
