The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at the IGNOU Maidan Garhi Campus in New Delhi. The signing of the MoU took place on January 12, in the presence of Dr. Alok Chaube, Registrar of IGNOU, and Dr. Charan Singh, Deputy Director-General Meteorology (DDGM) from IMD.

Partnership between IGNOU and IMD for Data and Research

The establishment of the AWS is expected to have multiple benefits. It will serve as a valuable resource for IGNOU faculty, researchers, and students across various disciplines such as geology, geoinformatics, geography, environmental sciences, and agriculture. The station will provide crucial data for project work and research related to meteorology and the environment.

Benefits for the Local Community and Students

In addition to its educational benefits, the AWS is also expected to contribute to the awareness of the local community. This initiative highlights IGNOU’s commitment to promoting academics and research in the field of environmental and earth sciences. Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Vice Chancellor of IGNOU, emphasized the significance of the AWS data for the use of students and researchers. He acknowledged the efforts of the School of Sciences in launching several Master’s programs.

IGNOU’s Wide Reach

As a leader in open learning, IGNOU offers a wide range of courses in various fields such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Management, and Technology. It operates through a network of 56 regional centers, 11 recognized regional centers, and nearly 2000 learner support centers across the country. This allows students to choose exam centers different from their study centers, providing them with the flexibility to appear for exams anywhere in India.
