North Tyneside Disability Forum (NTDF) has taken a significant step towards combating food insecurity in Shiremoor, North Tyneside. They have unveiled an affordable cafe supermarket at their headquarters, a move supported by local authority funding. The supermarket is designed to cater to individuals who struggle to afford food, allowing customers to procure £10 worth of groceries for a mere £5. The supermarket operates every Monday from 11 am to 1 pm, simultaneously with the charity’s ‘Warm Welcome’ initiative. This program invites residents to stay warm on-site if they are concerned about heating their homes.

Addressing Food Insecurity Among the Disabled

A report from the Food Foundation in December 2023 emphasized the fact that almost a quarter of households with a severely disabled adult face food insecurity. Often, disability benefits fail to meet essential costs, putting financial strain on food budgets for many disabled individuals. The NTDF supermarket primarily serves disabled people, offering them a reliable and affordable source of groceries. However, it also welcomes those without disabilities, demonstrating inclusivity in its approach to alleviate food insecurity.

NTDF and Local Authority Join Hands

Dr. Robert Dennis, Chairperson at NTDF, expressed optimism about the supermarket’s potential to enhance NTDF’s efforts to address food insecurity. He emphasized the supermarket’s role in supporting local families amidst the economic challenges they face. The supermarket’s launch was inaugurated by Dame Norma Redfearn DBE, Elected Mayor of North Tyneside Council. She underscored the council’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to affordable food and addressing the impacts of the ongoing cost of living crisis. The council’s support highlights a collective effort to tackle food insecurity in the region.

Broad Spectrum of Support

The NTDF does more than just run a supermarket. It provides a broad spectrum of support to its service users, offering financial advice and guidance, among other services. The addition of the new service is expected to enhance their assistance programs, further enabling them to support those in need, particularly in these challenging times.
